Once considered the heart of old Lima, this Grand Plaza has important monuments and buildings, including a bronze fountain dating back to 1650, the Archbishop's Palace with its elegant balconies and the Government Palace, which dates from 1924.
The catacombs in the Monasterio de San Francisco are appropriately creepy. Lima used as a cemetery until 1810, still house thousands of skulls and bones, all classified by type. Visitors can tour the catacombs and visit the monastery, which has a collection of religious art and a library of the 17th century.
